FREEDOM FOR ARIEL
It is spring time in Boston and a tiny parakeet
named Ariel is overtaken with the resolve to free himself from his cage, to
join the wild birds and dance the spring dance. Once he escapes, he soon finds
that freedom is scary and hard work; he will need help, or he will parish.
He is bullied by a flock of sparrows for being
different, and is just about to give up when a sparrow named Zephyr finds him
and teaches him how to survive in the wild world. As winter approaches Ariel
becomes sick, he cannot handle the cold climate. Zephyr introduces him to a
duck named Rosalind who helps Ariel migrate south with the promise that she and
Ariel will return in the spring.
Adjusting to freedom is both glorious and frightening;
whether it is leaving our parent’s home or living as a refugee in a new
country. I wrote this story for a little girl in a wheel chair, but I feel it
speaks to all of us at some level.
FREEDOM FOR ARIEL is an
1170 word picture book complete with illustrations.
